In physics, units are standardized quantities used to measure and express physical properties such as length, mass, time, temperature, and electric current. They provide a common language for scientists and engineers to communicate measurements accurately and compare results consistently. Without units, numerical values would be meaningless, as the context of what is being measured would be unclear.
The International System of Units (SI) is the globally accepted standard for measurement, based on seven fundamental units: meter (m) for length, kilogram (kg) for mass, second (s) for time, kelvin (K) for temperature, ampere (A) for electric current, mole (mol) for the amount of substance, and candela (cd) for luminous intensity. All other physical quantities, called derived quantities, are expressed in terms of these base units to ensure uniformity in science and engineering worldwide.
